About our town

Melville is a small town located northwest of New Orleans and southeast of Shreveport in St. Landry Parish, LA. The population was 1,041 at the census in 2010. Founded in 1889, it is located near the Atchafalaya River, close to Highway 105. The town has garnered a reputation as the Catfish Capital of Louisiana, and has its roots firmly planted in the fishing industry from many years ago when it had lively docks and icehouses. These days, there is still plenty going on in the community. Check out our Community Events page to see what’s coming up next, or ask around in town when you arrive. We always have a warm welcome for visitors to our small town!
